Buying Guide
Topsoil, fill dirt or mulch?
Fill dirt is the structural layer — compactable subsoil for changing grade. Topsoil is the living layer that grass and plants grow in. Mulch goes on top of beds to hold moisture and starve weeds. Most yard projects use two of the three.
Fill below
Use fill dirt to raise grade and fill low spots. It compacts firm and stays put.
Topsoil on top
4–6” of screened topsoil gives roots the organic matter they need.
Mulch to finish
2–3” of shredded hardwood insulates roots and keeps beds tidy — refresh annually.
Frequently asked questions
Can I plant directly in fill dirt?+
No — fill dirt has little organic matter. Cap it with at least 4” of topsoil for grass, 6–12” for gardens.
How much topsoil for a new lawn?+
4–6” deep. One ton covers about 60 sq ft at 4” — our calculator does the math from your dimensions.
How much mulch do I need?+
One cubic yard covers about 100 sq ft at 3” deep. Keep mulch a few inches clear of trunks and stems.
Is delivery really free?+
Yes — every price you see includes dump-truck delivery to your address. Enter your zip code on the product page to confirm your area and see the next available delivery date.
Where does the truck unload?+
Wherever you point — the driver dumps the load exactly where you want it, as long as the truck can safely reach the spot. We confirm access before dispatch.
