Enter your beds, get cubic yards and the bag equivalent, then order shredded hardwood mulch in bulk.
One cubic yard of mulch covers 108 square feet at 3 inches deep and replaces 13.5 store bags. Those two numbers do most of the planning. The calculator below does the rest.
Mulch is sold by volume, not weight. A yard of shredded hardwood weighs only 400–800 pounds yet spreads as far as a yard of stone. Most suburban front-yard bed sets land between 3 and 5 yards.
The formula, with a worked example
cubic yards = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27
bags (2 cu ft) = cubic yards × 13.5
Three beds totaling 500 sq ft at 3 inches: 125 cubic feet, or 4.6 cubic yards. With the cushion the calculator recommends 5.5 delivered. In store bags that would be about 63.
How much does a yard of mulch cover?
Sold by the yard, so the table shows coverage per cubic yard:
| Depth | 1 cubic yard covers | Bag equivalent |
|---|
| 1 inch | 324 sq ft | 13.5 bags per yard |
| 2 inches | 162 sq ft | – |
| 3 inches | 108 sq ft | – |
| 4 inches | 81 sq ft | – |
How much does a yard of mulch weigh?
Between 400 and 800 pounds depending on moisture, with shredded hardwood averaging around 600 dry. Rain makes it heavier but no bigger, which is exactly why mulch trades in volume. For scale: a full-size pickup bed holds about 2 loose yards.
Mulch FAQs
How much mulch do I need?
Bed area in square feet, times depth in inches, divided by 324. That is cubic yards. At the standard 3-inch depth one yard covers about 108 square feet, so a 500 sq ft bed set needs about 5 yards.
How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?
13.5 of the standard 2-cubic-foot bags. A typical 5-yard delivery replaces 67 bags, and bulk usually runs less than half the per-yard price.
How deep should mulch be?
3 inches for new beds and weed control. 2 for a yearly refresh. Never more than 4 in total, because deeper layers suffocate roots and repel water.
How much does a yard of mulch weigh?
400–800 pounds depending on type and moisture. Shredded hardwood averages about 600 dry.
