Crushed Gravel ordered online by the ton. A dump truck delivers to your Riddle address and unloads right where you point.
Crushed gravel is often confused with crushed stone. Both are mechanically crushed and angular, but crushed gravel comes from pit-run gravel deposits while crushed stone comes from quarried bedrock. The angular edges lock together well in both, but crushed gravel can contain more fines and may compact differently depending on the source.
Riddle gets about 36 inches of precipitation a year. That means any crushed gravel surface needs to be graded for drainage, and washed material may be preferable in areas where water pools.
No single size works for every job. The table below shows what each product is suited for and, more importantly, what it is not suited for.
| Product | Best for | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 3/8" Crushed Gravel | Fine compacting layer | Not for heavy traffic or wet areas; use as a top dressing only. |
| 3/4" Crushed Gravel | The workhorse size for base and drives | Not for decorative use; dust and size vary by source. |
| 1" - 1 1/2" Crushed Gravel | Structural base under heavy loads | Not for foot traffic; requires mechanical compaction. |
| 1 1/2" Crushed Gravel | First lift over soft subgrade | Not for surface finish; large voids remain. |
| 2"-3" Crushed Gravel | Mud control and deep fill | Not for a driveable surface; use as subbase. |
The table below maps typical projects to the recommended product and a note on placement.
| Project | What to order | Depth or note |
|---|---|---|
| Shed or slab pad | 3/4" Crushed Gravel | Compacted base layer |
| Soft or muddy subgrade | 1 1/2" Crushed Gravel | First lift to stabilize |
| Trench backfill | 2"-3" Crushed Gravel | Fill in lifts |
| Farm and site access road | 3/4" Crushed Gravel | Compacted surface |
| Compacted base | 1" - 1 1/2" Crushed Gravel | Compacted in layers |
Soils mapped in the Riddle area are commonly poorly drained. The ground belongs to hydrologic group D, which means it takes water in very slowly, so most rain runs across the surface. That makes drainage and a deeper base more important here than in many other places.
About 84 days a year bring at least a tenth of an inch of rain, so you should plan delivery onto firm ground. The county permits about 166 single-family homes a year, and much of that building work will involve some crushed gravel base. Around 33 days a year drop below 32F, which limits the work window but does not cause deep frost. Snowfall averages only about 1 inch a year, so plowing damage to a loose surface is rarely a concern. Without a hard freeze to lift the surface, drainage and washout are what decide how long the material lasts. Ground freezing here is not a significant factor, so the base layer does not need extra depth for frost protection.
To determine the tonnage for your project, measure the length and width of the area and decide on the depth. Multiply those dimensions to find cubic yards, then convert to tons. Use our material calculators to get an accurate estimate for your specific job.

Yes. Riddle has about 33 freezing days a year, so ground frost is not a major issue. However, heavy rain can soften surfaces. Delivery depends on site access and your approval of the confirmation email.
Plan around roughly 84 wet days per year when at least a tenth of an inch of rain falls. Scheduling delivery onto firm, dry ground is easier outside those wet periods.
The size depends on the job. Use 3/4" for general base and drives, 1.5" for first lifts over soft ground, and 2"-3" for mud control and deep fill. Refer to the product table above.
