Sand ordered online by the ton. A dump truck delivers to your North Dakota address and unloads right where you point.
Sand is sized by what it is used for. In North Dakota, the choice between fine, washed and playground sand changes how the material performs in concrete, under pavers, or in a sandbox. Gravel Monkey delivers three types of sand across North Dakota by the ton.
Each grade has a different grain size and cleanliness. The right pick depends on your project and the depth you need. We explain what each product does so you can order with confidence.
| Product | Best for | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Mason Sand | Mortar, paver joints, fine leveling | Fine, clean grains that pack well under pavers and in masonry work. |
| Washed Sand | Concrete work and clean fill | Washed to remove fines, making it reliable for concrete mixes. |
| Playground Sand | Play areas and sandboxes | Soft, screened sand that is free of sharp edges and debris. |
The depth you need depends on the project. Sand settles under weight, so compact each layer as you go. This table maps common jobs to the right product and depth.
| Project | What to order | Depth or note |
|---|---|---|
| Pipe bedding | Washed Sand | 6 inches under pipe, compacted in lifts |
| Paver leveling course | Mason Sand | 1 to 1.5 inches after compaction |
| Mortar and masonry | Mason Sand | Mixed at 1 part sand to 3 parts cement |
| Sandbox or play area | Playground Sand | 8 to 12 inches for depth and safety |
| Pool base | Mason Sand | 2 to 3 inches, compacted smooth |
North Dakota sees annual precipitation from about 18 to 24 inches across the cities we deliver to. That rainfall is low enough that sand stays workable most of the year, but the ground freezing is the real issue. About 178 to 192 days a year stay below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on where you are in the state, and most of the state sits in the severe band for ground freezing. Ground that freezes deep moves as it thaws, which is why the base layer matters more here than the top layer.
Soil across the served cities falls mostly into hydrologic groups B and C. Those soils drain moderately well or slowly, so a sand base needs to be thick enough to handle water movement under patios and foundations. A deeper layer of compacted sand reduces frost heave risk.
The NDDOT runs a spring load-restriction program each year. Sand deliveries are subject to those limits when they are active. Plan ahead by ordering before or after the restricted period so that the truck can reach your site with a full load.

Tonnage depends on the project area, the depth you pour, and how much the sand compacts. A cubic yard of sand weighs roughly 1.3 to 1.5 tons dry and more when wet. Use our sand calculator to convert your dimensions into tons so you order the right amount for a single delivery.
Sand orders are placed online by the ton, and the delivered price is calculated at checkout based on your ZIP code. A dump truck brings the load to your address. Loads range from 1 to more than 40 tons per delivery. Free delivery applies on qualifying orders, and first-time customers can use the code FIRSTTIMER50 for $50 off their first order.
The delivery date must be at least 3 business days after the order date. You pick a window at checkout: morning (7 am to 12 pm) or afternoon (12 pm to 5 pm). A valid phone number is required to confirm the delivery. You get an email confirmation, then a second email with the window and a photo of the load. Delivery goes ahead only after you approve that second email. You or someone you nominate must be at the site during the window. The truck needs a road width of at least 12 feet. If access is tight, the crew unloads as close as they safely can. Missed or failed deliveries may result in a fee. About Gravel Monkey explains how we source sand. If sand is not all you need, we carry these materials for the same North Dakota delivery area:
Every project starts with the tonnage. Measure your area, decide the depth, and run it through our sand calculator. Then return to the North Dakota hub to order sand or any other bulk material delivered to your address.
Sand can be delivered year-round, but spring road restrictions affect when trucks can carry full loads. The NDDOT spring load-restriction program limits axle weights on certain roads during the thaw period. Plan your delivery outside that window, or accept a lighter load. The delivery date must be at least 3 business days after the order date.

The smallest load is 1 ton, which is roughly two-thirds of a cubic yard of dry sand. The largest load is more than 40 tons on a single dump truck. You can order any amount between those limits in 1-ton increments.
Enter your ZIP code at checkout. The delivered price is calculated based on your location and the tonnage you order. You see the total before you confirm the order. No need to call or request a quote.
