Sand ordered online by the ton. A dump truck delivers to your Montana address and unloads right where you point.
Sand is sold by the ton, and the size you choose changes how it behaves in a base, a joint, or a play surface. Gravel Monkey stocks three grades of sand for jobs across Montana and delivers them by dump truck to your address.
The material is the same from one load to the next, but the right grade depends on the project. Whether you are filling a sandbox or bedding a pipe, picking the correct size keeps the work stable.
Mason Sand is the fine grade used for mortar and paver joints. The other two serve specific jobs.
| Product | For | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Mason Sand | mortar, paver joints, fine leveling | Fine sand with small particles for smooth joints and leveling. |
| Washed Sand | concrete work and clean fill | Clean, washed sand for concrete mix and bedding. |
| Playground Sand | play areas and sandboxes | Sifted sand without sharp edges for safe play. |
Sand for a patio base is not the same as sand for a sandbox. Use this table to match your project to the right product.
| Project | What to order | Depth or note |
|---|---|---|
| Sandbox or play area | Playground Sand | 6 to 12 inches |
| Paver leveling course | Mason Sand | 1 inch after compaction |
| Pool base | Washed Sand | 2 to 3 inches |
| Mortar and masonry | Mason Sand | Mix with cement per spec |
| Pipe bedding | Washed Sand | 4 to 6 inches around pipe |
Montana's climate affects how sand settles and drains. Across the cities we deliver to, annual precipitation runs from about 13 to 25 inches. That range means some areas get enough rain to shift a poorly compacted base, while others stay dry. The freeze cycle is long: about 158 to 215 days a year below 32F. Most of the state sits in the severe band for ground freezing, which pushes moisture upward and can heave a thin base.
The soil in the served cities mostly falls into hydrologic groups B and C. That means moderate to slow drainage, so a sand base needs to be thick enough to handle the water that comes with spring melt. Thaw softens the ground for a stretch each spring, which is when a thin layer shifts underfoot. On top of that, MDT runs a spring load-restriction program that limits heavy loads on certain roads when the ground thaws. This can affect delivery timing in some areas, but the date you choose at checkout accounts for these conditions.

Sand is sold by the ton. A cubic yard of dry sand weighs about 1.3 tons, but the exact weight depends on moisture and compaction. To get a close estimate, use our sand calculator.
Sand orders are placed online by the ton, and the delivery price is calculated by ZIP at checkout. A dump truck brings the load to your address. Loads range from 1 to 40-plus tons, and free delivery is available on qualifying orders. Use code FIRSTTIMER50 to get $50 off a first order.
The delivery date is chosen at checkout and must be at least 3 business days after the order date. You pick a window: morning (7 am to 12 pm) or afternoon (12 pm to 5 pm). A valid phone number is required to confirm the delivery. You get an email confirmation when the order is placed, then a second email closer to the date with the scheduled window and a photo of the material being loaded. Delivery only goes ahead once you approve that second email. You agree to be available or to have someone you nominate at the site during the delivery window. The site needs a road width of at least 12 feet for the truck.

Yes. MDT runs a spring load-restriction program that limits heavy loads on thawing roads. When you place an order, the delivery date you select accounts for these conditions, so your sand still arrives on schedule.
Rainfall ranges from about 13 to 25 inches a year across the served cities, so some areas need a thicker sand base to handle runoff. The freeze-thaw cycle of about 158 to 215 freezing days per year can heave a shallow base. Soil groups B and C mean moderate to slow drainage, making base depth important for stability.
